2009 was a difficult year for many in IT and security. Job insecurity, financial market fluctuations, and hard budget decisions were on almost everyone's plate. Yet hackers didn't stand still; instead they managed to crank out over 25 million pieces of malware (according to recent reports from PandaLabs). In 2010, IT & security will need to hone in their skills to deal with new platforms and new threats. Targeted attacks are increasing, as is the use of social networking by all. My advice: remain vigilant and communicate with your stakeholders both up AND down the chain (users, executives, employees, etc). |

One cannot escape the string of negative news making the front page day after day. How do such news impact the security world? Many security leaders are sounding the alarm with regards to the potential risks that insiders (or about-to-be-laid-off insiders) pose to your company data. In times of shrinking morale, budgets, and employee rosters, it is important to focus on what works. If you have a story to share or want to ask questions from other members of the security profession, join us at our next meeting and/or get in touch via email.

Hard to believe it but another year has gone by. What have you done this past year? Whether you're a current member or a prospective member, the chapter is a great opportunity for you to meet other security-minded folks from the region. As you know, security cannot happen in a vacuum and security professionals have a need for continuous learning and improvement in order to stay current with current threats and defenses.

We've spent the past month improving our capabilities and our presence in Web 2.0. We created a Mankato Chapter ISSA Group on LinkedIn (let's keep in touch that way). Now, we're getting ready to hold another round of elections, this time for the positions of Treasurer and Communications Officer (see the Bylaws under About us for more information). Stay tuned for more information.
Thank you to all of you who completed our survey; the results are in and we have received some good feedback on when to meet (2nd week of the month), what time to meet (late afternoon or early evening), and what to meet about (round tables, cert prep, webcasts). We look forward to seeing you again and meeting new members.

What's the best kept secret in town? The Mankato Chapter ISSA is a great infosec resource for the Southern MN region.
But the only way that we can continue to build our chapter is by ensuring that all of our members (and non-members) get involved.
If you're looking for something to do, or know of a topic or presenter
that you'd like to recommend, please contact me or one of the officers.
We are YOUR chapter. |
